Meher Banaji’s 53 years’ association with the Happy Home & School for the Blind as Principal and now Administrative Director has transmuted the school from a single room institution for six court committed students into a vibrant dynamic three storey residential school for 200 visually & multiply impaired children ranging from 3 to 20 years.

In 1992, Justice M. Hidayatullah, Chairman, Happy Home & School for the Blind and former Chief Justice and Vice President of India wrote of the school as “without doubt one of the best run schools in the country … the credit goes to the Principal Miss Meher Banaji and her organizing ability. In my opinion she is one of the finest teachers one can find in India.”

Justice Hidayatulah’s opinion of Meher Banaji was reinforced and confirmed in 1996 by the President’s Award for “outstanding contribution to Special Education” (visually impaired). 1996 also brought Meher Banaji’s work special and valued recognition from her own co-religionists, The Federation of Parsi Zoroastrian Anjumans of India’s Award for Social & Community service was conferred upon her at a special meeting of Anjuman Heads held at Sanjan and the Rotary Club of Bombay Award for Meritorious Service to the Community. In 2004 Meher Banaji was the recipient of the “Padma Shri” award conferred by the President of India.

Due to her relentless commitment to quality education and life skills for the visually and multiply impaired, the Happy Home & School for the Blind is recognized as a pioneer institution and is generally accepted as a role model for teachers and professionals in the field who visit or are deputed to the school as part of their educational training.
